Our guides are knowledgeable, qualified and ready to safely guide you on your very own journey through central Hokkaido, with private tours ranging anywhere from 3 to 31 days in length.

How does it work?

If you have a plan or idea that you want to see become a reality, please contact us, send us all of your wants and needs, give us a couple of days and we will get back to you with a full itinerary as well as a detailed costing of your trip.

Where can we go?

Our experience and knowledge in central Hokkaido branches back to 1984, when our founder, John Morrell, fell in love with the area and started offering tours to international clients. Because of this we have an intimate knowledge of all the local zones, namely the Daisetsuzan mountain range, northern Taisetsu, the Ashibetsu/Yubari mountains, Northern Hidaka and the Tomamu area.

What time of year is best?

While the Japanese snow and skiing season lasts right through to the end of May in the high country, here at Alpine Backcountry, we focus on the peak powder months. This is the period of time ranging from the end of December right through to the first week of March. During this time the snow stays consistent, cold and dry, and lets us offer you a reliable product that most other parts of the world just can't match. This has been true for the 40 years we have operated here.

Had an absolutely fantastic time on the recent powder trip. Could not have asked for more from Felix as our trusty and trusted guide. He did an awesome job with all of us, every day from start to finish.
— Colleen Glenn Sydney Australia, New Powder Road Trip 2016.
We had such a great time with Alpine Backcountry Guides. Both trips were excellent. Our trip to Tomamu was also excellent and I just want to single out Sam for some extra praise. Sam has a great head on his shoulders and went over and above to make sure we hit some great backcountry without getting into any tricky situations!

Tour Tips

Tip # 1: We recommend modern Alpine Touring (AT) gear for this tour. This way you can use the same kit for either on or off piste skiing, and if you are new to AT skis and bindings, you have the bonus of learning how to use AT skis and associated equipment. (skins, beacon, etc).

Tip # 2: Book flights that will arrive in Chitose or Asahikawa airport by about midday on day one of your tour. For your departure day, dont book a departure flight any earlier than about 1:00 pm.
